Beauty | Ideal Skin Care Routine

I've been doing quite a bit of research into my skincare needs.
AKA stalking Caroline Hirons' blog on a level that many would describe as creepy/freakish/psychotic (pick your preferred adjective or add a better one in the comments).

After she featured on a Body Talk video with Pixiwoo it seems that a lot of the beauty blogging world have been singing their praise about her and her no bullshit approach and spot on advise towards skincare.

With this "Hirons mania" I have decided to reassess and reorganise my skin care routines (and many, many wishlists).
I also assumed that some of you would like to see it and see some of Caroline's approved and raved about products all in one post. So here it is!

Keep in mind that this is first and foremost suited and fitted around my skin. (What can I say? I'm a self obsessed creep)
My skin is Combination/oily

But there is a framework here and products that should work for every skin type.

If you are looking for professional, brilliant and funny posts directed at more specific skincare topics, products and issues please make your way over to Caroline Hirons' Blog.

If you like, she is the skincare philosopher and I am merely the student, summarising her beauty bible.
I'm a skincare grasshopper and she is the master.

I will put a "*" next to all Hirons approved products.
Also, I may have used (and by "may have" I mean, "definitely have") used one of Caroline's images of the pixi toner as it is an absolute pig to find a decent large image of.

Why? Some people think it's only important to cleanse in the evenings. However cleansing in the morning is just as important! Us humans sweat and shed throughout the night so it's important to wash that off your face in the morning!

It's also important in terms of make up to cleanse to ensure your makeup has the best surface to sit on.
For the mornings it's probably best to pick a less rich cleanser than what you would use in the evening as you generally don't want anything too heavy for day time skin. (Though it's not essential)

The Products:

Biologique Recherche - P50 Balancing Exfoliating Lotion
(Available in different strength formulas. Not available online UK. Available in Liberty)*

or

Pixi - Glow Tonic (Not available online but can be ordered through email/phone)*

or

Why? This step in the morning is optional in the morning depending on how sensitive your skin is. Some people will be able to hack this morning and night where as others will leave this step just to the night. Especially depending on which of these products you buy as the Clarins is said to be stronger (in fact, some people say they would only want to use this toner a couple of times a week) than the P50 and Pixi Glow Tonic.

Toner is a two step job (something that Caroline preaches throughout her blog) and you need "one to take away" and then "one to add"

This is the "taking away" step. Exfoliating and smoothing the bumps and flakes away whilst neutralising the Ph balance of your skin to prep the skin for the next steps.

The Products:

and for an extra boost Caudalie - Beauty Elixir*

Why? "One to add" is the next and last toning step. Now that the surface of the skin's Ph balance has been reset it's important to add something moisturising to really prep the skin for the next few steps. I personally like to use these two products together. First the Liz Earle and then the Caudalie. It leaves my skin feeling completely refreshed and calm.

The Products:

Why? Hydraluron and Pepta-bright are also products that Caroline raves about. Hydraluron is a serum that helps attract moisture to the skin as most of us are dehydrated and need an extra bit of help to keep our skin happy and hydrated. Pepta-bright is a serum that's main focus is to help reduce scarring as well as other basic skin troubles.
I've added this Emma Hardie Serum into the mix as it's a bit more of your typical serum. You could choose to use this with Hydraluron and Pepta-bright if you're a fan of layering products on non-make up days (or any days) or you could use this instead of.
It's important to have some form of serum in your routine as it is there to help repair skin and it also helps other products in your routine work their magic to their best effects!

The Products:

or

(SPF version not pictured because I'm a fool but it's the one I own)

Why? Your skin always needs moisture! Whether it's a little bit or a lot.

Now here is where you may have to really differ from me product wise. As I have combination/oily skin I don't look for heavy day/morning moisturisers unless it's for a no make up day. That's why I have two different morning moisturisers to suit my different daily needs!

If I'm planning on wearing make up I'll go for Effalcar MAT every time. It gives me moisture without make me mega oily and is a nice base for makeup. If you're expecting this to keep you matte for the entire day then you're expecting a bit too much from this product. If you're oily it's inevitable that you're going to get oily at some point in the day no matter what products you use. This product is good for keeping it at bay for a fair amount of time.

In terms of Clarins HydraQuench I wouldn't push this towards anyone with oily skin as it does say on the bottle "Normal to dry skin". I bet you're thinking "why, oh, why did you buy this if you have oily skin, Rebecca?" well, I didn't buy it when I had oily skin. I bought it when my skin was a lot dryer. For some reason my skin has turned around so I'm simply using this up on no-make up days as I do like this cream.

If you don't want to buy another heavier product for no-make up day moisturising I would recommend using an oil layered up with your day cream.

The Product:

Why? I know eye cream is a bit of a love it, hate it or don't really give a shit about it kind of deal. I'm kind of the latter - I do give a slight shit about it but for the most part I'm indifferent and just do it with the intentions of trying to keep future problems at bay.

I find this doesn't really affect my concealer or smudge my mascara down my face (though I've never had mascara smudging issues) and it's meant to have light reflective properties as well as having a Spf10- which is always good for day wear.

I can't really say that I'm noticed a difference but I like doing this step and I'm very unobservant when it comes to anyones under-eyes - including my own.

The Product:

Why? A lip balm is essential. Chapped lips are painful and if you're an avid lipstick wearer like I am you want to keep your lips looking as healthy as possible.

The Products:

Why? It is VITAL that everyone cleanses their face every evening. You need to wash your day off of your face. Especially if you're wearing make up or sun screen - in fact you should double cleanse on those days.
Miracle Makeover Facial Oil is perfect for pre-cleansing. It will help break down your make up. The Emma Hardie is perfect for a bit of an evening pamper as well as for taking off your make up and the grime that has collected throughout the day!
The Ren Clay Cleanser is a lot more clarifying and perfect to use alongside the Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm on days where you need to double cleanse.

Why? This step in the evening is a must. And now I am going to repeat what I said before.
Literally. Copying and pasting that mofo as well as the next two steps because they're the same.

NOTE:  Clarins is said to be stronger (in fact, some people would only want to use this toner a couple of times a week) than the P50 and Pixi Glow Tonic.

Copying and pasting this bad boy too. It's the same as the mornings!

The same as the mornings... but layering products tends to be more welcomed in the mornings

Why? Layering products up (especially in the evenings) is a great way to get the best out of your skin and using oils on your skin is also super effective in boosting some mojo into the skin. Even if you're oily don't give oils a miss in the evening. Using Oils on the skin is actually beneficial to oily skin types as it tricks the skin into producing less of its natural oils.
I'm currently using the Divine Oil and I really like it. However, I'm very interested in trying a few others. If you're trying to keep your beauty stash down no need to worry, you only need one oil for this step (though I want all of them).

The Product:

Why? *Insert moisturiser best for your skin here* for me I think this pricey fellow will suit me down to the ground. Right now I'm finishing up an Avene moisturiser back from the dry skin days - not ideal for ME but it will do for now!

The Product:

Why? As I mentioned before eye cream is a stage that a lot of people skip or obsess over. I'm not too crazy about eye creams but I still want one in my routine to prevent ageing and to attempt to help their general appearance so I'm personally not too fussed on a fancy cream and this one seems to be quite non-fuss.

Another repeat!

The Product:

Why? A lip balm is essential. Chapped lips are painful and if you're an avid lipstick wearer like I am you want to keep your lips looking as healthy as possible.

OTHER PRODUCTS

The Products:

Why? These are products you might want to mix in every other day or a couple of times a week to "boost" the appearance of your skin. Not a must have and very much in the "cult product" camp but if skin care is meant to be a wardrobe system then having a few extra helpers is surely a welcome notion.

The Products:

Why? Masks are a great way to relax and pamper your skin with, whilst also being very helpful in settling flare ups of specific skin troubles. So it's important to have at least three types.

Hydrating - For when your skin is extra thirsty (Aveda)
Exfoliating - For when your skin is feeling a little rougher than you'd ideally like (Nude)
Clarifying (mainly clay masks) - For when your skin is feeling clogged and congested (Borghese)

Hope this has been helpful!
It was the most time consuming post I've ever done - and that really is saying a lot.

What is your skincare *~+*~*+~*HOLY GRAIL*~+*~*+~*?

Until next time,

  4. Caroline Hirons is a blogger favorite for sure. I have only tried a few things on this list. I love the Nuxe Reve de Miel balm, it softens and smells great. I like using it to prep the lips. I want to try the SR Ceramic Slip cleanser very badly. I'm waiting to use up some cleanser I already have before making the purchase. I love CeraVe moisturizing lotion and LRP Efflaclar Duo. Both are HGs for me!
